New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal, accompanied by his wife Sunita Kejriwal, launched the Pujari, Granthi Samman Yojana on Tuesday from the historic Hanuman Temple at Connaught Place. Simultaneously, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi introduced the scheme at the Gurudwara in Karol Bagh.

Support for Priests and Granthis

Announced ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Pujari, Granthi Samman Yojana aims to provide financial aid to religious leaders. Under this initiative, temple priests (pujaris) and Gurudwara granthis will receive a monthly honorarium of ₹18,000. Kejriwal emphasized that the scheme would come into effect if the AAP forms the government in the upcoming elections.

“This is the first time such a scheme is being introduced in India,” said Kejriwal. “Priests and granthis have dedicated their lives to serving the community, conducting rituals, and connecting people with God. Despite their selfless work, they have often been overlooked, and their families have been neglected.”

A Legacy of Firsts in Delhi

Highlighting AAP’s achievements, Kejriwal noted, “We have initiated many first-of-their-kind projects in Delhi, from improving schools and hospitals to providing free bus travel for women. This scheme is another step toward recognizing those who serve the community selflessly.”

He expressed hope that other states would follow Delhi’s example. “I urge BJP- and Congress-led governments to implement similar programs in their regions. Such initiatives set a new benchmark for public welfare.”

Concerns About Political Opposition

Kejriwal also addressed potential hurdles, accusing opposition parties of obstructing AAP's welfare schemes in the past. He pointed out that the BJP tried to disrupt the Mahila Samman Yojana and Sanjeevani Yojana through legal challenges and administrative delays. “I appeal to them not to hinder this initiative, which aims to honor the contributions of priests and granthis,” he added.

The Pujari, Granthi Samman Yojana marks another bold move by the AAP, reflecting its commitment to addressing underrepresented community needs. As the political landscape heats up before the 2025 elections, this scheme could play a crucial role in shaping public sentiment.
