New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to allow MCD elections to be held in the national capital, claiming that postponing elections weakens the democratic system.

Following a letter from the Centre demanding their unification, the Delhi State Election Commission has sought legal opinion on whether it can still hold elections for the three municipal corporations in the city. The commission postponed the declaration of poll dates for the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation after receiving the communication on Wednesday.

In response, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to allow MCD elections to take place in the national capital, claiming that postponing elections damages the democratic system.

"The decision is being questioned. Why didn't they do it (unification) sooner, given that the BJP has been in power for seven and a half years?" Kejriwal asked. “Why did they remember it only an hour before the scheduled press conference that is on Wednesday  that they have to unify the three civic bodies? "The BJP knew there was an AAP tsunami in Delhi and that they were going to lose elections," the chief minister stated at a press conference.
