Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala assembly has once again passed a resolution unanimously advocating for the official change of the state's name to "Keralam". This decision marks the second time the assembly has put forth such a resolution, following a review by the Union home ministry, which suggested some technical adjustments.

The resolution calls upon the Centre to modify the state's name from "Kerala", as currently listed in the First Schedule of the Constitution, to "Keralam".

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan introduced the resolution, which garnered support from members of both the ruling LDF and opposition UDF parties.

Previously, in the ninth session of the 15th legislative assembly on August 9, 2023, a similar resolution was passed seeking amendments in both the First and Eighth Schedules of the Constitution. The Union home ministry, however, advised that changes were necessary only in the First Schedule.

Chief Minister Pinarayi emphasized the historical significance of a unified Kerala for Malayalam-speaking communities, aligning with the ideals of the national freedom struggle. He urged for the adoption of 'Keralam' as the state's name across all languages listed in the Eighth Schedule.

The Kerala assembly's resolution for the change to 'Keralam' was unanimously adopted, reflecting broad political consensus. The Union home ministry's recommendations for technical adjustments were incorporated before passing the resolution.
