NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader JP Nadda has assumed the position of Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, replacing Piyush Goyal. Simultaneously, he has been sworn in as the Union Health Minister, inheriting additional responsibilities amidst his tenure as BJP National President.

JP Nadda's appointment as Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha comes as part of the recent cabinet reshuffle, where he also took charge of the Chemicals and Fertilisers Ministry. Despite his term as BJP National President ending this month, Nadda is expected to continue until after the upcoming state elections later this year, ensuring continuity in leadership until a new president is elected. During this transitional period, a Working President may be appointed to support Nadda in managing daily party affairs.

Following his oath-taking ceremony, there were speculations about Nadda stepping down from his role as BJP National President, which he assumed from Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2020. However, it now appears that Nadda will retain his position as the BJP's chief organizational leader.

According to party regulations, the election of a new National President can only proceed once organizational elections are concluded in at least 50 percent of all states, a process expected to span approximately six months. Therefore, the new president is anticipated to be elected around December or January, after the completion of these state-level processes.
