Kochi: The Ernakulam District Administration has taken possession of the Jacobite Syrian Cathedral Church in Moolanthuruthy in the early hours of Monday. This step has been taken after the Kerala High Court set a deadline for handing over the church to the Orthodox faction on 17 August. The court was scheduled to consider this case at 10 am today.

The police arrested the protesters belonging to the Jacobite group of Malankara Church before capturing the church. Ernakulam Deputy Collector Snehil Kumar Singh has said that the district administration will submit a report to the court today. In this regard, the Kerala High Court has accepted that it is appropriate to seek the help of the Central forces to capture the Moolanthuruthy Church of the Jacobite faction. The High Court is hearing the petition of orthodox faction filed by Victor Father Jio George.

The state government had earlier said that due to the corona and floods in Ernakulam, the district administration is not in a position to capture the church. The State High Court had made it clear that the Church would not be given at any cost to the Victor of the Jacobite faction. It has been instructed that if the Collector was of the opinion that if sufficient police could not be deployed due to the deployment of police for corona duties, then they will wait.
