Kochi: The Kerala government has rejected a plea by a Muslim student seeking permission to wear a hijab and full-sleeved dress as per religious rituals in the Student Police Cadet Project. The Kerala government said that giving such permission in the state police program would greatly affect secularism in the state. The Student Police Cadet (SPC) Project is a school-based youth development initiative that provides training for high school students to develop into future leaders of democratic societies.

The state home department in its order said that the government, after carefully perusing the memorandum of the student, is fully satisfied that the complainant's demand is not maintainable. If such permission is considered in the Student Police Cadet Project, such a demand will be made in other similar forces, which will affect the secularism of the state. Kerala's Pinarayi Vijayan government said it would therefore not be correct to give any indication that religious symbols are shown in the Student Police Cadet Project.

The faculty of student police cadets had said that according to Islamic beliefs, wearing a scarf and full-sleeved dress on the head will not be allowed, after which the student had moved the court. The Kerala High Court had also turned down the demand for wearing a hijab and full-sleeved dress under the Student Police Uniform. The student then pleaded with the state government.
