Kerala: As Kerala further expects more rains in the coming days, the state government has opened two shutters of Idamalayar dam in Ernakulam district and Pampa dam in Pathanamthitta on Tuesday morning. The 2 shutters of Idamalayar dam were raised by 80 cm at 6 am, whereas Pampa dam gates were opened by 30 cm. Yesterday, Ernakulam District Collector Jafar Malik had urged those living on the banks of the Periyar River to take precautions.

With water levels growing up due to masive rains in the catchment areas, a red alert was issued in respect of ten dams in Kerala, two shutters of Kakki dam here were opened and pilgrimage to Lord Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala has been put on hold for now.

In view of the prevailing situation and expected worsening of weather conditions, the government had on Monday also cancelled pilgrimage to the Lord Ayyappa shrine in Sabarimala for the "Thula Masam" ( 17 October to November  15) poojas. The death toll in incidents related to heavy rains, including landslides and flash floods in Kerala climbed to 27. Kottayam district reported most deaths, 14, while Idukki reported 10, 2 in Thiruvananthapuram and one in Kozhikode. This is the worst case of rain-related damage ever recorded in Kottayam.
