Srinagar: Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, the younger brother of imprisoned Lok Sabha MP Engineer Rashid, is poised to enter the political arena by contesting the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections from the Langate constituency in Handwara, North Kashmir. This seat was previously held by his brother.

As the acting president of the Awami Ittihad Party (AIP), Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh is determined to advance his elder brother’s political mission. Enthusiastic about his formal entry into politics, Khurshid aims to bring about positive changes and make a significant societal impact. Currently employed as a teacher at Government Middle School Mawara, Khurshid is contemplating voluntary retirement from his teaching position.

Sources indicate that Khurshid is expected to submit his retirement papers from the education department in the near future. He plans to publicly present AIP’s agenda and actively engage with the community to address their concerns and aspirations.

The AIP, which gained prominence in Jammu and Kashmir politics through Engineer Rashid’s notable victory over former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and People’s Conference candidate Sajad Lone, is expected to see a surge in political figures joining the party with the announcement of the J&K election schedule.

Engineer Rashid has been incarcerated in Delhi’s Tihar jail since 2019, following his arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with an alleged terrorism funding and money laundering case.
