Sports Ministry Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each to boxer Sunil Chauhan and his brother Neeraj Chauhan, an archer. Due to the corona pandemic, their father has lost his job pushing their family into a hardship situation. Under the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons, the sports minister has announced this ex-gratia for the sport stars from Uttar Pradesh.
Neeraj has bagged won a silver in the 50m event in the Senior Archery Championship 2018, besides a medal at the 2020 National School Games 2020, his brother Sunil won boxing gold at the Khelo India University Games earlier this year. In a sports ministry release, Sunil said, “The financial help will go a long way to help me and my family and we are really thankful to the Minister to helping us at the time of our need”.

The sports minister and ministry is taking all its steps to support Indian athletes in all ways. Earlier this year the Sports Minister has announced Rs 2 Lakh cap on the salary of the Indian coaches training athletes in a way to encourage them to produce better results and to attract the former best performers to become trainers. Tokyo Olympics which is close by has more Indian Participants. Their training got affected due to corona. Today, the Sports minister took a review meeting on India’s preparation for Tokyo Olympics with the Indian Olympic Association and Senior officials and the minister added despite the pandemic we will prepare well to give the best performance.

Earlier this year he announced, a player who needs an amenity will be provided to practice at home. Any needy sportsperson who is in financial need can apply for assistance through the Sports Ministry’s website or can also write to myasoffice@gmail.com.
