Dhanvantari is considered the God of Ayurveda. Lord Dhanvantri is worshipped on Dhanvantri Trayodashi or Dhanteras. Ganesh-Lakshmi is brought home on this day. It is believed that on this day nobody lends to anyone. Therefore, all things are bought in cash. On this day, along with the worship of Lakshmi and Kubera, Lord Yamraj is also worshipped. This is the only day in the year when Yamraj, the god of death, is worshipped. This worship is not done during the day, but a lamp is lit in the night for Yamraj. This day is also important from a religious and historical point of view. It has been said in the scriptures that in families where a lamp is donated for Yamraj on the day of Dhanteras, there is no premature death.
There is also the practice of purchasing silver on the day of Dhanteras. If possible, buy a pot. The reason for this is observed that silver is the symbol of the moon, which provides coolness in the mind. Patience has been called the greatest wealth. The people who have patience are healthy, happy and wealthiest. The decoration of Diwali in homes also starts from this day. On this day, Lakshmi Ji is called after cleaning the houses, making Rangoli and lighting a lamp at dusk.
Replacing old utensils and purchasing new utensils is considered auspicious on this day. Purchasing silver utensils on Dhanteras gives maximum merit. On this day, Kartik should take bath and burn lamps for three days at places like ghats, gaushalas, wells, temples etc. during Pradosh period. On this day a dough of flour for Yamraj is made and kept at the main gate of the house. This lamp is called Yamraj's lamp.
