On December 19, 2019, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) accepted a resolution to observe International Clean Air Day for blue skies on September 7 every year from 2020. Earlier, highlighting the problem of air pollution, the Government had started monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI) in 2014 and today eight standards are being monitored at pollution levels. What happens on International Clean Air Day for blue skies today is the impact of air pollution and how it can be controlled.

Effects of Air Pollution :-

- If carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen, oxide, hydrocarbons, etc. are constantly available in the atmosphere, then it is natural that breathing in such a polluted environment will lead to lung diseases. There may also be diseases like vomiting, suffocation, headache, eye irritation, etc.

- Smoke from vehicles and factories contains a large amount of sulphur dioxide, which is first converted into sulphuric acid and then sulphuric acid to air to polluted. On rainy days it falls to the earth with rainwater in which the acidity of the land increases and the production capacity decreases. At the same time, sulphur dioxide causes asthma.

- Some chemical gases reach the atmosphere, act with the ozone layer there to reduce its volume. The ozone layer absorbs harmful distortions coming from space. Tell us that when there is a deficiency of ozone zone, there can be deadly diseases like skin cancer.

Air pollution leads to the damage, metals and monuments etc. The Taj Mahal has also been damaged by the Mathura oil refinery. Low oxygen levels in the atmosphere are also fatal to animals, as lack of oxygen will cause respiratory problems to animals. Absorption of chemical substances and gases on crops, trees, etc.

Measures to control air pollution :-

- Factories should be set up away from urban areas, as well as forced to use technology that absorbs excess part of smoke and prevents excess air from getting waste and gases.

- To slow down the process of urbanization, employment and cottage industries and other facilities should be provided in villages and towns. Fuel smoke in vehicles has to be adjusted to such an end that at least smoke comes out.

- The technology of free stoves and solar energy should be promoted. It is advisable to use fuel that will cause complete oxidation and minimize smoke.

At the same time, indiscriminate deforestation should be curbed. In this work, the Government, as well as NGOs and every human being, should stop the extinction of forests and participate in the tree plantation programme.

- Children should be made aware of it by including it in the curriculum. To sensitize the human society about its knowledge and the damage caused by it, publicity should be propagated through media like Doordarshan, Radio Journals etc.
