The biggest contribution of PC Mahalanobis is called the 'Mahalanobis distance'. With the help of this formula the distance between a point and the distribution is being measured. This formula is being widely used in the area of cluster analysis and classification.  Contribution of P.C. Mahalanobis: With the aim of providing comprehensive socio-economic data, P.C. Mahalanobis established the National Sample Survey in 1950. He has also set up the Central Statistical Organisation to coordinate statistical activities in the country. The introduction of techniques for surveying samples on a large scale is included in his main works. He is also being credited with assessing the yield of the crop using the method of random sampling.

PC Mahalanobis had also devised a statistical method, it is also being used to compare the socio-economic status of different groups. P.C. Mahalanobis had also pioneered in implementing statistics to plan flood control.

Mahalanobis azad was an important member of the first Planning Commission of India and has also been awarded the Padma Vibhushan. The theme of this year's National Statistics Day is to end hunger, improve food security and nutrition and also take sustainable farming forward. So that by the year 2030, hunger is over and food safety can be ensured for all. The note issued by the government on the National Statistics Day said, "This year due to the pandemic, Statistics Day is going to be celebrated through video conferencing. ''
