On Thursday, the National Green Tribunal denied the permission for Chhath Puja in the popular Ravindra Sarobar Lake in Kolkata. The Trinamool Congress has decided to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court. The BJP has supported the party on the issue. The opposition continues to blame in Trinamool Congress governance in Mamata Banerjee's leadership for the votes of Hindi speakers. The Kolkata City Development Authority has urged the NGT to slack its order banning Chhath Puja rituals at Rabindra Sarbar in South Kolkata.

The KMDA urged the exemption of the ban for just one day in view of the sentiments of the individuals. The KMDA also asked the court to take measures to control pollution in lakes. Chhath Puja will be held on 19th and 20th November. Even after the ban, hundreds of devotees had opened the gates of Ravindra Sarobar to worship in November 2019. They even lit firecrackers and played the drums.

The government has allowed to perform Chatt Pooja at other water bodies in the state. The controversy arose because of the 2019 incidence. Chhath Pooja is a festival dedicated to the Surya Dev and Chatti Maiya. The Chatti Mata is called the sister of Surya Dev. The festival is mostly celebrated in the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Delhi. West Bengal Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said on Thursday afternoon, "We will approach the Supreme Court. The same is now to see when the final decision will be taken".
