Kolkata: A 29-year-old woman was arrested on Friday by the Cyber Crime Cell of West Bengal's Kolkata Police. She is allegedly accused of spreading false rumors about the Coronavirus on social media. The woman had posted that a doctor has been infected with corona while treating patients in the state government hospital. The woman has also shared a fake page photo of a Bengali newspaper.

A senior officer of the Kolkata Police's detective department said, "This is the first action taken by the city police in the case of posting fake news and spreading rumors related to coronavirus." The accused woman is a singer and acts in a theater group. A high official of the state health department said, 'This is fake news. The state health department immediately filed a complaint with the Kolkata Police. Till date, no doctor or any health worker has been infected with the virus.'

The woman has been charged under section 66C (punishment for identity theft) of the Information Technology Act and under IPC for spreading panic among people in related sections. State CM Mamata Banerjee and city police commissioner Anuj Sharma are warning citizens not to post fake news on social media and not to spread rumors.
