Colomba: Sri Lankan fast bowler Lasith Malinga has set a new record in his name. Malinga has become the highest wicket-taker in T20 International cricket. He achieved this feat in the first T20 match against New Zealand at Pallekal.
Malinga overtook Shahid Afridi of Pakistan. He bagged 98 T20 wickets and Malinga was only 2 wickets behind him. Malinga, who retired from Test cricket in 2011, bowled out Colin Munro in the first over of New Zealand's innings to equal Afridi's 98 wickets. Malinga then bowled Colin de Grandhom to a personal score of 44 to set a new record in his 74th T20 International. Malinga is 36 years old.
Malinga took both wickets through the yorker. He now has 99 wickets in 74 matches. Shahid Afridi took 98 wickets in 99 matches. They are followed by Shakib Al Hasan (88) of Bangladesh, Omar Gul (85) of Pakistan, Saeed Ajmal (85) and Rashid Khan (75) of Afghanistan. New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee is also in the top 10 with 69 wickets in 59 matches. He took two wickets in the first T20 against Sri Lanka. However the Sri Lankan team had to face defeat in this match.
