Somnath Chatterji is a big name in Indian politics he has earned a huge respect. He is one of the most renowed parliamentarian, lawyer and politician. He served lok Sabha from 1971 to 2009. From 2004 to 2009, he served as the speaker of Lokshabha.

He was born in Assam state but grew in Kolkata. His father Nirmal Chandra Chatterjee was also a lawyer , parliamentarian and jurist. He was one of the main member of the Hindu mahasabha. Somnathn chatterjee has achieved his master degree from university of Cambridge and law degree from Middle Temple in London.

In 1968, he joined to CPI and first ran for office in 1971, winning a seat in Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal. He was selected many times from various constituencies  in the state but he lost to Mamta Banerjee.

He served as the leader of CPI hierarchy from 1989 to 2004 and from 2004 to 2009 he served as the speaker in parliament. He argued that the post of the speaker was apolitical and not tied to his party status in spite of that CPI expelled from party. In 2009 he left politics after compeliting  his tenure as a speaker.

In 1996, he won the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. His biography Keeping the Faith: Memories of a Parliament was published in 2010.
