A box means nine litres of alcohol. CIABC is the apex body of the Indian alcoholic beverages industry. However, liquor sales during the September quarter have shown improvement compared to the June quarter. According to the data, during the current financial year i.e. from April to September, IMFL sales have been 1,220 lakh cases across the country. This is 29.06 per cent less than 1,720 lakh cases of the same period of the previous year. The industry association says that there has been a slight improvement in liquor sales in the second quarter, but the first quarter has made a real loss.
During the first quarter, liquor sales were closed nationwide for some time due to the lockdown. According to CIABC, states like Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal and Rajasthan have recorded the biggest decline in alcohol sales. It is because of this that these states levied a corona tax on the sale of liquor after the lockdown. It is known that the liquor industry contributes about 2.5 lakh crores to the revenue of the state governments.
