New Delhi: During the hearing on the issue of the sale of liquor in bars and restaurants in the national capital till 3 am, the Delhi Police said in the Delhi High Court that it is not in favour of extending the deadline for serving liquor in bars beyond 1 pm. Citing concerns over women's safety by the Delhi Police, they expressed concern over the irresponsible behaviour of people by providing liquor till late in night is not acceptable. The court will now hear the case next in November.

In the court of Justice Yashwant Verma, who is hearing the case, the Counsel for Delhi Police said that the agency was saying "no" to the extension of the deadline, and meetings of a joint consultative group were also held regarding it. They have objected to the extension beyond 1 pm after considering several facts. Delhi's demography has a "unique character". There are many main offices and residences of important people. In such a situation, by serving alcohol till 3 pm in the night, the behaviour of people under the influence of alcohol in the city can be irresponsible.

Delhi Police's counsel Harish V Shankar gave the reply on Tuesday to a petition filed by the National Restaurant Association of India. It had sought a direction from the Delhi High Court to restrain the Delhi Police from interfering in the operation of restaurants and bars till 3 am under the excise policy.
