SYDNEY: Runners-up in the T20 World Cup last year When they take on the reigning champions Australia in their Super 12 opening on Saturday, New Zealand will be eager to grab some crucial early momentum in the ongoing competition, said their stalwart captain Kane Williamson.

Williamson scored a quick-fire 85 off 48 balls for New Zealand in the 2021 T20 World Cup final in Dubai, helping them to record a difficult 172/4 in 20 overs. However, Australia was able to reach its goal with seven balls to spare thanks to a brilliant unbeaten 77 off 50 balls from Mitchell Marsh and a critical 53 off 38 balls from David Warner.

"It was a fantastic game, and it was disappointing that we weren't on the winning team. In that game, Australia played outstandingly. The tournament's opening match is tomorrow. As is often crucial in these kinds of brief events, each team wants to get out to a fast start and gain some momentum. It should be a good game, and it's nice to play Australia first up," Williamson remarked in the pre-game press meet.

In all competitions since August 2009, including three T20Is and more recently, the three ODIs for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in September of this year, New Zealand has failed to win a single game in Australia. Williamson, though, didn't want to focus on their track record in Australia in the past.

"No, we haven't given it much thought. Naturally, a large portion of those matches have been against Australia, a highly capable team. You travel here for global competitions, where you compete against a wide range of opponents on several fields. For us, it's just a matter of adhering to the fundamentals, playing the cricket that matters to us, and ultimately anticipating the tournament. Williamson said when asked if his team could find it difficult to focus because of Australia's greater record against New Zealand: "It certainly doesn't stop us trying to do our best and win regardless of whatever records are behind us. They make a strong team. They are incredibly clinical at home and at most of the venues where they play, which reflects their position in the game and how well they understand the surroundings. Hence, there is that regard.

We want to continue giving our all to the things that are crucial to our game. We are confident in our ability to win matches across the board, and the team is eager for the contest. We've had some great matches over the years, as well as some great series, with the most recent one being the most recent World Cup, I believe. The crew is excited to participate in another global event, so it's good to be back.
