The Karnataka Government previously indicated it's too early to take a call now on lifting the nation-wide lockdown but said it's in favour of its extension in COVID-19 hotspots in the country by at least an additional two weeks.

Now the State is considering imposing a limited period 'lockdown' if the Covid-19 cases continue to rise. Just days after ruling out the possibility of a lockdown in the state, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa gave a one-week deadline for the cases to come down, failing which he will consider harsh measures, including imposing night curfew across the state and, if needed, lockdown.

Though he did not specifically say 'lockdown', the CM said he will "consider other measures". Speaking to the media in Bidar, he said: "Due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, we have already implemented night curfew in several districts. If the other districts also report more cases during the week, the government will think of similar measures there too.

We will wait for another week. If the situation is not under control, we will think of imposing curfews or other measures required to handle the situation." On Sunday the State reported over 10K cases which saw a marginal dip on Monday, recording 9579 new Covid cases and 52 deaths.

Earlier, Telananga Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend the 21-day national lockdown imposed to contain COVID-19 outbreak beyond April 14, saying it was essential to save lives.
