The year 2024 has been marked by significant natural disasters that have impacted communities across the globe. These events, ranging from extreme heat waves to devastating earthquakes and landslides, have left lasting scars on the affected regions. Here’s a recap of nine major earthquakes and natural disasters that rocked the world this year.
1. Las Vegas Heat Wave:Â
On July 7, 2024, Las Vegas, Nevada, broke its all-time temperature record as it hit 120°F (49°C). This extreme heat wave resulted in 491 heat-related deaths, with temperatures surpassing 120°F, causing widespread power outages and major disruptions. The heat was felt across much of the southwestern United States, including Phoenix, Arizona, where at least 13 heat-related deaths were reported, and 160 more remain unconfirmed.
2.Ethiopian Landslide
Between July 21 and July 22, 2024, a catastrophic landslide occurred in the South Ethiopia Regional State, severely impacting the local communities. The massive landslide buried two villages under tons of debris, leading to the tragic loss of 257 lives. Rescue operations were launched promptly, but the extensive damage and challenging terrain made recovery efforts difficult, leaving many families devastated. The heavy rainfall triggered the landslides, which swept away entire villages. Tragically, a second landslide buried those who had come to help after the first one, making it one of the deadliest landslide events in Ethiopia’s history.
3. Drought in Zambia:
Beginning in January 2024, Zambia experienced a severe drought, which has been called the worst in at least 20 years. The drought led to food shortages, power outages, and widespread economic hardship, forcing the government to declare a national emergency. Millions of people across the country struggled with food and water scarcity, significantly impacting daily life.
4. Hurricane Helene:Â
Hurricane Helene, a powerful tropical storm, made its way across the Atlantic before making landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region on September 26, 2024. The hurricane brought torrential rains, high winds, and severe flooding to the area, causing widespread damage to homes, infrastructure, and the environment. Emergency teams and local authorities were mobilized to assist in the recovery efforts, as the storm’s impact was felt across several states. It continued its path through the southeastern states, weakening across Georgia, South Carolina, and beyond. The storm claimed over 230 lives and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure, leaving entire communities devastated.
5. Typhoon Yagi:Â
On September 7, 2024, Typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam, causing extensive flooding and destruction. The powerful typhoon claimed more than 600 lives and affected several countries across Asia, leaving countless communities in ruins and displacing thousands of people. The storm destroyed homes, infrastructure, and businesses, with many areas still recovering.
6. Kerala Wayanad Landslide:
On July 30, 2024, heavy rains in Kerala's Wayanad district triggered deadly landslides, resulting in 254 fatalities, with 118 people still missing. The landslides affected several villages, including Punjirimattom and Mundakkai, and were linked to deforestation, poor building practices, seismic activity, and the impact of global warming. The disaster became one of the deadliest in Kerala’s history.
7. Indonesian Volcano Eruption:
On November 7, 2024, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Indonesia erupted eight times, sending volcanic ash as high as 8,000 meters above the crater. The eruption killed ten people and forced the evacuation of thousands. Nearby villages were devastated, and the eruption caused widespread damage to infrastructure, leaving many people homeless.
8. Spanish Floods:Â
On September 30, 2024, flash floods in Spain’s Valencia region caused widespread destruction, leading to the deaths of 216 people. The sudden flooding, triggered by heavy rains, left many stranded and displaced, with rescue teams working tirelessly to assist those affected by the natural disaster.
9. Noto Earthquake
On January 1, 2024, Japan’s Noto Peninsula was rocked by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6. The earthquake caused significant destruction, with buildings collapsing and landslides further compounding the damage. The epicenter was located near the coastal region, where emergency services responded swiftly to aid affected populations. The event prompted a nationwide response, highlighting Japan’s preparedness for seismic activity, yet the extent of the devastation posed a challenge for recovery efforts. The earthquake hit with a maximum intensity of Shindo 7, resulting in 281 deaths. The quake left behind a trail of devastation, damaging homes, infrastructure, and businesses across the affected regions.
