NEW DELHI: "Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a priority disease for elimination in a time-bound way for India, unlike what may be the situation in some other nations.

Through a mission mode, multi partner, multi sector, targeted push for which we have created a roadmap, India is dedicated to eliminating lymphatic filariasis by 2027, three years ahead of the global target.

This was revealed by Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, who chaired the National Symposium on India’s Roadmap to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi today. Dr VK Paul, Member, NITI Aayog was also present at the event.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said, lymphatic filariasis is a priority for elimination in a timely manner rather than being a neglected disease as it may be in certain other nations.

He reaffirmed India's commitment to the goal of eliminating lymphatic filariasis from the nation by the end of 2027 while kicking off the National Symposium on India's Roadmap to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis here.

The health ministry has developed a new five-pronged strategy as part of which multi-drug administration (MDA) will be held twice a year in synchronicity with National Deworming Day on February 10 and August 10, according to Mandaviya, as part of its commitment to eradicate the disease by the end of 2027.

The strategy's other components include early diagnosis and treatment, involving medical schools in strengthening morbidity management and disability services, inter-sectoral convergence with allied departments and ministries, integrated vector control with multi-sectoral coordinated efforts, and utilising existing digital platforms for lymphatic filariasis and alternative diagnostics.

While pointing out that 133 districts in 20 states and Union Territories offer free anti-filarial medications, Mandaviya advocated for the "proper synergy of governmental action and community change."

He said, the pan-Indian MDA Campaign will be launched in mission mode on February 10 this year after the Enhanced Strategies for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis were introduced at the national symposium.

To guarantee that everyone has access to LF-preventing medications, the ministry will "observe this day with essential public visibility efforts at the national, state, district, sub-district, and block levels," Mandaviya said.
