UNITED NATIONS: A UN spokesman said Madagascar is ready for another tropical storm just ten days after cyclone Batsirai killed at least 121 people earlier this month.
Tropical storm Dumako is expected to impact the country's northeast on Tuesday, according to Stephane Dujarric, the UN Secretary-main General's spokesman. According to reports, Cyclone Batsirai struck Madagascar's southeast over the weekend, displacing 29,000 people and demolishing, flooding, or damaging about 19,000 dwellings.
"Health teams have been deployed to affected locations, where they are collaborating with the government to scale up the response," according to Dujarric. "Both financial and in-kind food aid is provided through food partners." In-kind food assistance is frequently supplied when food markets are not functioning, there is not enough local food available, or victims are unable to access markets.
