Vedanta gets big blow from Madras High Court, dismisses plea for Sterlite plant

Chennai: Vedanta Limited has received a major setback from the Madras High Court. The court has kept the company's decision to close the Sterlite copper plant in Tuticorin unchanged. Vedanta had filed a review petition in the Madras High Court but the court has refused to change its old decision.

It is noteworthy that this case belongs to 2018, when the police fired during the protests against Vedanta group company Sterlite, in which 13 people lost their lives. After this, the Palaniswami government of Tamil Nadu had decided to lock the company's plant. The Tamil Nadu government issued a government order directing the pollution control board to seal the Vedanta group's Sterlite copper plant and close it 'permanently'. Vedanta approached the Madras High Court and the apex court against this decision but found no success.

In 2013 also the plant was closed for several weeks when the National Green Tribunal (NGT) was facing a lawsuit against it for damaging the environment. In Tuticorin district, protests against this plant were going on at various places for a long time. The regional people were opposing to increase the capacity of this plant. Apart from this, the protesters claimed that the level of pollution in groundwater has increased due to the plant.
