Mumbai: The new Government of Maharashtra on Thursday lifted the ban on the construction of the Mumbai Metro-3 car shed in Aarey Colony in a significant decision. Now that the construction of the metro 3 car depot in Aarey will start soon, CM Eknath Shinde announced on Thursday that the government has given official permission to resume the work. Meanwhile, his deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed former environment minister Aaditya Thackeray's allegations that the car shed would cause flooding in the Mithi river.
The previous government had shifted the car shed site to Kanjurmarg after protests over the ecosystem in Aarey being disturbed. Environmentalists and local residents have protested again after the new government, soon after being sworn in last month, announced that it was taking the depot back to Aarey. Appealing to the activists on Thursday, Shinde said, "The construction work, at the car shed site, will resume soon. Further delays will increase the cost of the eco-friendly project and affect the international debt. The additional burden will also have an impact on other projects in the state. We have considered all aspects before making a decision. "
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the project was allowed by the Supreme Court, and if someone is trying to stop it even after the Supreme Court's approval (of the SC), their intentions are not good. He said the government respects environmentalists and agrees that they are free to express their views. Reminding history, he said, Prithviraj Chavan's [Congress] government had earlier given permission to the Aarey site.
