Mumbai: There is a tussle between the Uddhav government and the governor regarding the election of the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari rejected the Speaker's election proposal. Actually, the Uddhav government had changed the way of conducting speaker elections through the rules committee. On this, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has written a letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray calling the amendment in the voting process unconstitutional.
The governor has said that a different method cannot be put in place for the election of speaker and deputy speaker. In fact, the Uddhav government had converted secret voting into voice votes ( by stating support). After terming the change as unconstitutional, senior Shiv Sena leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut hit back saying it was mandatory for the governor to accept the recommendations of the state cabinet.
The post of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker was vacated only last year. Nana Patole was earlier the Assembly Speaker, but the Congress later made him the state president, after which he resigned as speaker. The Maharashtra government had recommended the governor to hold the speaker's election in this winter session of the assembly, but the opposition BJP opposed the change in election methods.
