Mumbai: The state cabinet has approved the proposal of a bill to curb the heinous crimes happening to women and children in Mumbai. Accordingly, there are provisions for stringent punishment and immediate trial including the death penalty, life imprisonment and heavy fines for the culprits.

In order to implement it across Maharashtra, the proposal of the Bill proposes to change the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said that it would be introduced in the assembly during the upcoming winter session. The two-day winter session of the assembly starts in Mumbai from 14 December. The Bill will be introduced for debate and approval in both houses of the Legislature.

It will be known as the Powers Act after it takes the form of law. Deshmukh further said that it has a provision to complete the investigation in a case within 15 days and to hear it within 30 days. Meanwhile, the government has decided that the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will be held in Nagpur instead of Mumbai this time. He hoped that this new law will reduce crimes against women.
