Maharashtra: Parents of several medical students in Maharashtra have protested against the fees demanded by medical institutions. Protesting parents said, "Why to pay full fees for hostels and mess facilities even though these facilities were not used due to lockdown last year." The parents of a student of a private medical college in Pune recently said, 'My son is studying from home since March 2020. Since May, second, third, and fourth-year medical students were on covid duty, so they did not stay in hostels, so why should we pay for services that were not used?'

Apart from this, some parents raised their questions to the college management. While some institutes have offered a waiver of fees, some have given the option of paying in installments. Recently, the parents of a student of a private medical college in Nashik said, 'Hostel and mess fees are about Rs 1.45 lakh per year. Following our complaints, the institute has agreed to give a fee exemption of Rs 15,000, although this is not enough for us.'

Apart from this, the director of the private medical college says, 'The expenditure in medical institutions continued during the lockdown. None of the employees were fired, nor was their salary deducted. Because our staff was taking online classes on one hand, on the other hand, covid-19 was also operating hospitals. We require fees to pay salaries to our employees and to maintain the maintenance of the institute '.

With this, Sudha Shenoy, a worker, and mother of a medical student, said, 'Not all parents are upset with the demand for full fees. Almost all the state colleges had demanded fees in 2020 and they also gave sufficient time to pay fees to parents. It was stated by the institutions that fees are required to pay salaries to the staff and to bear the cost of maintenance of the hostels.'
