Mumbai: Senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis in Maharashtra's capital Mumbai claimed last Thursday that the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Morcha government has no intention of providing reservation to Maratha. You must all know that the High Court had struck down the law introduced in 2018 in this regard. In fact, the leader of the opposition in the Assembly, Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan, was targeted for his recent statement on the issue.

Reacting to the Union Council of Ministers' decision last Wednesday, he said, "Giving powers to states and Union Territories to make their OBC list does not pave the way for Maratha reservation.'' Chavan, on the other hand, is also the Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Maratha Reservation.

Talking to the media, Devendra Fadnavis said, "I have learned from reports that the Union Council of Ministers has approved a proposal to empower any community to be declared backward. However, I want to make it clear that Ashok Chavan and the Maha Vikas Morcha Government have no intention of providing reservations to the Maratha community.'' The BJP leader also said, "Chavan is demanding the Central government to relax the 50 percent reservation limit. Earlier, he formed a general amendment opinion between 22 congress and UPA parties. Chavan and Congress colleagues are aware that the Central Government cannot amend the Constitution by going against the structure of the Constitution. The State Government will have to declare the Maratha community backward first.''

On the questions of state government ministers on Maharashtra governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's visit to Marathwada, Devendra Fadnavis said, "According to the Constitution, the Governor has the right to visit. So, those who do not understand the Constitution. Such people are questioning the governor's visit. He is questioning the governor about visiting.''
