Mahindra & Mahindra has revealed that a 5-door version of the new-generation Thar, which was debuted in 2020, is in the works and will be available in May 2021. A 5-door Mahindra Thar has long been rumoured. Finally, the 5-door version of the Mahindra Thar has been seen in testing, confirming the SUV's launch date.
The test mule that was observed had camouflage covering every inch of its body, but even so, the 5-door Thar has the same distinctive design cues as the 3-door Thar. The test mule had a hard top roof, a spare wheel installed on the tailgate, and identical tail lamps to those on the Thar. The SUV's overall appearance is similar to that of its smaller sibling, although it is unlikely that the 5-door model will also be offered with a retractable roof.
The 2.2-litre diesel Thar, which produces 130 bhp at 3750 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 1600 and 2800 rpm, and the 2.0-litre petrol Thar, which produces 150 bhp at 5,000 rpm and 300 Nm of torque between 1250 and 3000 rpm, is likely to remain mechanically identical to the 3-door Thar and receive the same engine options. Both engines are coupled to 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions, and the 3-door model comes standard with 4x4 throughout the board. It's probable that the 5-door model will also come with a 4x2 option and bigger engine choices, but we won't know for sure until it is released, which is probably going to be near the end of next year.
