In a big political development, two Maldivian ministers resigned on Tuesday following their suspension earlier this year for making derogatory remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The resignations occur as speculation grows about Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's visit to India.

The ministers, who had been suspended in January, faced backlash for their comments, including one instance where a minister referred to PM Modi as a "clown." The government announced that their resignations were due to "personal reasons." The timing of their departure is notable, coinciding with discussions about President Muizzu's potential trip to New Delhi.

The resignation of these ministers follows a period of strained relations between India and the Maldives. Diplomatic tensions flared earlier this year when Maldivian leaders criticized PM Modi for promoting Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination, which they perceived as a move to divert Indian tourists from the Maldives.

The Maldives, known for its luxury tourism, has been a focal point in regional geopolitics, particularly with concerns over increasing Chinese influence in the country. India has traditionally viewed the Maldives, an island nation of around half a million people, as part of its strategic sphere.

In an update on President Muizzu's visit, Heena Waleed, the chief spokesperson at the President's Office, confirmed that Muizzu is scheduled to visit India "very soon." She mentioned that the timing of the visit is being arranged to accommodate the schedules of both countries' leaders.

President Muizzu had previously visited India in June for the inauguration of PM Modi but had not yet made an official solo visit. Since taking office, he has moderated his stance on India, avoiding major shifts in regional alliances.
