Kolkata: After Punjab, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal is also going to come out with a proposal against the central government's extension of border security force (BSF) jurisdiction. The West Bengal government has decided to move a resolution in the Bengal Assembly on November 17 against increasing the jurisdiction of BSF from 15 km to 50 km. The Home Ministry had issued a notification on October 11 allowing BSF to search, seize and arrest within 50 kilometres of the international border in Punjab, Bengal.
The Mamata government in Bengal has taken a decision to move a resolution against the Centre's order a day after the Union Home Secretary visited Kolkata. Mamata Cabinet Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee has said that the proposal moved by the state government will explain how the Central Government is trying to destroy the federal system of the country. She said, "This step is against the federal structure. The Centre has taken an arbitrary decision without consulting the state government.''
According to the Minister, "If BSF is allowed to operate within 50 km from international borders, it will control 37 per cent of the state's land under the control of the BSF'' and ''this will cut off the authority of the State police." She said a decision on the matter was taken in the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee. Earlier also, CM Mamata Banerjee has written to the Central government expressing her objection against the decision.
