New Delhi: Interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi held a meeting with leaders of opposition parties on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut and DMK leader TR Baalu along with NCP chief Sharad Pawar. The meeting of senior leaders of the opposition faction comes at a time when West Bengal CM and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee is trying to establish herself as the main opposition face at Sonia Gandhi's residence 10 Janpath.

In fact, during her recent visit to Mumbai, Mamata Banerjee had raised the Congress tension by saying that there was nothing like the United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Tell me, UPA is a Congress-headed coalition. Mamata, who met NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena leaders, had staked her claim to form an opposition faction without the Congress. Mamata Banerjee had not even met Interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi during her recent stay in Delhi. Amid the rift in the relationship between the TMC and the Congress, it was believed that the entire opposition was now going to leave Sonia and follow Mamata. However, the meeting, amidst all these speculations, must have dealt a blow to Mamata's hopes.

The meeting was also attended by former Congress national president Rahul Gandhi and leader of opposition in rajya sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. It was reported that the meeting deliberated on the common strategy of the opposition in the ongoing winter session of Parliament. Farooq Abdullah said after the meeting that it was a meeting related to the issues of the country. We brainstormed on how we can work together and move forward and get the country out of this difficult situation. We have also reached a good agreement on all these issues.
