NEW DELHI: Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister, is set to present the Pharmacy (Amendment) Bill of 2023 in the Rajya Sabha, based in New Delhi. This bill aims to make revisions to the Pharmacy Act of 1948 and was already approved by the Lok Sabha on August 7th.

The core provision of the Pharmacy (Amendment) Bill 2023 stipulates that individuals registered as pharmacists under the Jammu and Kashmir Pharmacy Act of 2011, or possessing qualifications outlined in the same Act, will now be automatically recognized as registered pharmacists under the overarching Pharmacy Act of 1948. This recognition will be subject to the condition that these individuals apply for registration within a year of the amendment's enforcement and fulfill the requisite fee payment.

The bill, which secured passage through the Lower House via a voice vote, is intended to resolve issues related to the legal status of those registered or qualified under the Jammu and Kashmir Pharmacy Act. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister, emphasized that this amendment will particularly benefit the youth in the Jammu and Kashmir region. He highlighted India's role as a global pharmacy and the government's commitment to furnishing citizens with high-quality and affordable medicinal products.

During discussions about the bill, Mandaviya pointed out that since the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir has been experiencing rapid development. The region's healthcare infrastructure, railway network, and roadways have expanded under the Union territory's jurisdiction, thereby generating employment opportunities for the local populace.

Mandaviya also informed the legislative body that the Ayushman Bharat scheme has extended its benefits to over five crore individuals.
