New Delhi:: Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, expressed his deep gratitude on Wednesday, August 9, to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his unwavering support in opposing and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
In a letter addressed to Manmohan Singh, CM Kejriwal conveyed his thanks on behalf of the 20 million residents of Delhi for the resolute backing provided by Singh's party in the rejection and voting process of the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023. Kejriwal noted, "I wish to extend my sincere appreciation for your party's steadfast stance in rejecting and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023."
Kejriwal also took a moment to acknowledge the exceptional dedication displayed by Manmohan Singh during the discussions in the Rajya Sabha, particularly considering his declining health. He praised Singh's presence as an embodiment of serenity, dignity, and commitment to upholding India's democratic values and federal structure, even amidst challenges.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Manmohan Singh's presence within the Rajya Sabha reverberated a clear message to those attempting to undermine Indian democracy. He underlined that the determined resistance demonstrated by political leaders across generations and party affiliations would effectively counter any endeavors to weaken the democratic foundations of the nation.
Kejriwal added, "Your unwavering dedication echoes the principles cherished by generations of parliamentarians." Looking forward, Kejriwal expressed the anticipation of continued guidance and support from Manmohan Singh as they embark on a fresh chapter in their pursuit of safeguarding the rights of Delhi's citizens and confronting elements that undermine the constitutional framework.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that earlier, Arvind Kejriwal extended his gratitude to Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of the Congress party, and Rahul Gandhi, a prominent party leader, for their invaluable support in rejecting and voting against the GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The GNCTD (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was ratified on August 7, supplanting an earlier ordinance introduced by the central government for overseeing the transfers and appointments of officials within the Delhi administration. The bill received approval from the Upper House on Monday, with 131 MPs voting in favor of the legislation and 102 opposing it.
While advocating for the bill in the Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah defended its purpose, emphasizing that the proposed legislation aimed to establish efficient and transparent governance in the national capital, free from corruption.
During the deliberations concerning the bill in the Rajya Sabha, former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, in his inaugural participation in a debate, affirmed the legitimacy of the legislation and urged those in disagreement to exercise their independent judgment.
