MANIPUR: In the wake of escalating protests against the sexual assault of two women in Manipur, four individuals apprehended in connection with the case were placed in 11-day police custody on July 21. Simultaneously, an irate mob in the region set fire to the residence of another suspect, marking the second incident of its kind.
The ongoing sessions in both the Houses of Parliament were brought to a standstill for the second consecutive day due to the issue of ethnic violence in Manipur. Addressing the matter in the Lok Sabha, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh assured the government's readiness for a discussion. However, members of the opposition demanded a statement followed by a debate from PM Narendra Modi.
Consequently, the Manipur police initiated an extensive manhunt to apprehend all those responsible for the heinous acts. According to the FIR filed on June 21 regarding the sexual assault, it was recounted how an armed mob, nearly a thousand strong, viciously attacked a village in the Kangpokpi district. The attackers reportedly set houses ablaze, committed looting, indiscriminately killed and raped, and then abducted the two tribal women.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, a 26-second video emerged on Wednesday, rapidly becoming viral, which depicted the two women being stripped naked and subjected to molestation by a violent mob. The video showed them being led towards a paddy field on May 4, the day after violence erupted in the northeastern State, causing outrage throughout the nation.
