The Manipur Congress will write to the Indian Election Commission (ECI) to request a rescheduling of the first round of polling for the state's Assembly elections. Manipur will hold elections in two stages, on February 27 and March 3.

The 27th of February is a Sunday, and the Congress party has said that Sunday is a significant day for Christians. Christians in Manipur attend Sunday service, which is a "important day for the Christian community," according to Manipur Congress working president K Meghachandra.

"The ECI might consider doing the first phase of polling on a different day," Meghachandra stated.  "Manipur Congress will submit an official letter to the ECI on the issue," he added. It should be mentioned that 20 of the 60 Assembly seats in Manipur for which elections will be conducted are ST seats in Christian-dominated constituencies in hill areas.

In Manipur, tribal bodies, including student bodies, have called for the first round of polling to be rescheduled.
