New Delhi: Joint opposition candidate Margaret Alva looks 'disappointed' at the decision of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) not to vote in the Vice Presidential election. She describes West Bengal CM and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee as her good friend and is also surprised at her move. During an interview, Alva told that Mamata is not even picking up her phone. Let us tell you that the votes for the post of Vice President will be held on Saturday (August 6).

Talking to the media, Alva said that the Vice Presidential elections are a big challenge for the opposition parties as well. She said "I agree that if more parties supported a common candidate, it would have been more satisfying. But, whatever the reason, some are hesitant to join the opposition party.'' Regarding Mamata Banerjee, she said, 'She has been my good friend since the days of Youth Congress. I have fought for her, supported and been with her in every fight, I was shocked and disappointed when TMC decided to stay away from me. There is no whip in this election and it is a secret ballot. If you can't issue a whip, how can you tell your lawmakers not to vote? It is like issuing a negative whip.''

Alva expressed hope of changing TMC's views. At the same time, she has said that it is time for all the opposition parties to challenge the BJP. On talking to CM Banerjee, Alva said, 'She does not pick up the phone. I have written to her and people have spoken to her. All our phones are tapped, so there is a little hesitation in talking.' She further said, 'But the big question is, how will helping the BJP help the TMC? Mamata is trying to meet all the anti-BJP parties, so I don't understand why she is doing this.'
