Washington: Renowned African-American singer Mary Millben recently took to social media to commend Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what she described as "exhibiting compassionate leadership" through the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

In a post shared on X platform, Millben praised PM Modi's initiatives aimed at providing sanctuary to individuals facing persecution due to their religious beliefs. She underscored the inclusive nature of the CAA, which offers a pathway to safety and religious freedom for various religious communities including Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists.

The singer urged the US State Department to acknowledge PM Modi's leadership and to work towards enhancing diplomatic ties with India, particularly in the event of his reelection for a third term. Millben emphasized that the CAA symbolizes a genuine expression of democracy, providing protection and refuge to vulnerable communities.

In a post directed at the @StateDept, Millben stated, "PM @narendramodi is demonstrating compassionate leadership towards those persecuted for their faith and offering them a home in #India. A pathway to peace for Christians/Hindus/Sikhs/Jain/Buddhists seeking #religiousfreedom. When the PM is reelected for a third term, strive to be a better democratic partner in tone. The Citizenship Amendment Act is a true act of democracy."

Meanwhile, the United States expressed its concerns regarding the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in India, stating that it is closely monitoring its implementation. US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, addressing reporters at a daily briefing, emphasized the importance of respecting religious freedom and ensuring equal treatment under the law for all communities.

Millben had previously voiced her support for India's recent enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Monday, asserting, "This is a pathway towards peace. This is a true act of democracy."
