NEW YORK: Massive snowstorm hit various states in the northeastern United States on Tuesday causing hundreds of thousands of power outages.

The heavy snow caused power outages in New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont,  Xinhua news reported. According to the local government, more than 195,000 people in New York State were without power on Tuesday.

According to a notice from the New York State government on Tuesday, upstate New York received six to 11 inches (approximately 15-28 cm) of snow overnight, and the storm dropped wet and heavy snow that brought down trees, limbs, and power lines.

It went on to say that the state's emergency operations centre had been created to coordinate calls for help from local governments. Binghamton, New York, received up to 15 inches (38 cm) of snow, and Broome County was placed under a travel ban owing to felled trees and lack of power.

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York said, "I encourage those living in impacted areas to prepare a plan for the next two to three days." About 46,000 people in Pennsylvania were without power, and several vehicle accidents were reported as a result of the storm.
