Mauritius has detained Captain Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar of the Japanese ship MV Vakashio. Nandeshwar is 58 years old and is of Indian origin. The Mauritius Police have detained Captain Nandeshwar with the allegation that he had brought the ship closer to the coast to capture the WiFi signal.

Due to being brought close to the coast, the ship collided with the coral mound and broke into two. After this, thousands of tons of oil came out of the ship and spread in the Indian Ocean. Apart from this, the police is also questioning other crew members of this ship. On Tuesday, Nandeshwar was presented in a court in Port Louis. The court has directed to keep him under police arrest till August 25, besides detaining the ship's first officer. The cargo ship MV Vakashio belongs to Mitsui OSK Lines, which works for the Japanese company.

The company has reported bad weather as the cause of ship splits into two. The company said that the bottom layer of the ship had cracked, after which thousands of tons of oil had leaked from the ship. Technically, the ship was to remain 16 km from the coast, while it was stuck at a distance of just one kilometre. Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jagannath had declared an environmental emergency on this matter on August 8. The oil spill from the ship has occurred at a place where the Blue Bay Marine Park Reserve and the island are close by. Many species of marine and plants of Marine Reserve Park are in danger by the oil spill. After the leak, the colour of the water on many beaches of Mauritius has turned black.
