New Delhi: Voting for all 250 wards under the MCD Elections is underway since this morning. This election is considered to be a triangular contest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), BJP, and Congress. More than 1.45 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in the MCD elections. A total of 1,349 candidates are in the fray. Polling will be held from 8 am to 5.30 pm and counting of votes will take place on December 7. According to the State Election Commission, the total number of voters in Delhi is 1,45,05,358, including 78,93,418 men, 66,10,879 women, and 1,061 transgenders.

This is the first election after the process of delimitation and the creation of a unified MCD comprising north, south, and east Delhi municipal corporations. The integrated MCD came into existence from May 22. MCD was established in 1958. In 2012, during the tenure of then CM Sheila Dikshit, it was divided into three parts - North, South, and East Delhi Municipal Corporations. However, this year again the three were merged into one.

State Election Commission officials have said that the election officer and his team are fully prepared for Sunday's voting and adequate arrangements have been made for the deployment of security forces. This is the first municipal election in Delhi since the February 2020 riots and according to data shared by officials, 3,360 booths at 493 locations have been declared sensitive.
