Meghalaya: National People's Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's Neiphiu Rio will take oath as a Meghalaya, Nagaland Chief Ministers respectively today in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Together with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and others are also to be present for the swearing-in of the two Chief Ministers.
Neiphiu Rio, the chief minister of Nagaland with the longest tenure, is expected to take office for a fifth consecutive term following the victory. Rio handed Governor La Ganesan his letter of resignation on Saturday and asserted his right to create the state's new government.
According to information provided by the Indian Election Commission, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and Bharatiya Janata Party, the state's current government, regained control of Nagaland after winning 37 seats in the 60-member assembly (ECI).
By a huge margin of 15,824 votes, Rio defeated Seyievilie Sachu of the Congress to win the Northern Angami-II Assembly constituency. He received a total of 17,045 votes, or 92.87 percent of all the votes cast in the race. Significantly, Nagaland wrote its own chapter in history when it chose its first female MPs in its 60 years as a state. Before to Thursday's outcome, the state, which has had 13 Assemblies thus far, had never had a female Legislator.
Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse, two female parliamentarians from the governing NDPP, defeated the incumbent MLAs in the Western Angami and Dimapur-III seats, respectively.
While Congress and CPIM, who have been bitter rivals for years, forged a pre-election agreement to unseat the ruling BJP, the Northeast state witnessed a triangular election. The NPP-led alliance in Meghalaya has staked claim to forming the state's administration with the support of 45 MLAs, including two from the BJP.
Eight cabinet positions will be distributed among the allies, with two going to the United Democratic Party (UDP), one to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and one to the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP).
