Meghan Markle has written a powerful open letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi advocating for paid parental leave in the United States. The Duchess of Sussex has spoken out about the need of paid parental leave, particularly during a pandemic.

Markle stresses at the start of the letter that she is requesting paid parental leave as a "engaged citizen" and a "parent," not as a "elected official" or a "politician," as she is neither. "And because you and your congressional colleagues have a role in moulding family outcomes for future generations," Markle writes, "I'm writing to you at this critically crucial time — as a mom — to fight for paid leave."

"The epidemic has uncovered long-standing fault lines in our communities over the last 20 months. Millions of women dropped out of the workforce at an alarming rate, remaining at home with their children when schools and daycares closed and caring for loved ones full-time. Working moms and parents must choose between being there and getting compensated. "The sacrifice of either comes at a high price," Markle writes, adding that the "ideal of stability" comes at a high price "Even before the epidemic, many individuals have worked harder than they have in the past.

The Duchess of Sussex also disclosed details of her own childhood and how her parents struggled to make ends meet. She admitted to having worked as a waitress and done several odd jobs to make money meet.

Archie, two, and Lilibet, four months, are Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's children. After the birth of their youngest child, the couple allegedly took a 20-week parental leave.
