NEW DELHI: Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, led by Chief minister Eknath Shinde, on Tuesday unanimously passed the resolution on the state's row with Karnataka over border areas.

The state assembly unanimously approved a resolution stating that Maharashtra would vigorously defend its right to include all 865 villages, including Belgavi, Karwar, Nipani, and Bidar Bhalki, in Maharashtra in the ongoing Supreme Court dispute.

The resolution also condemned the Karnataka goverment for its anti-Marathi stand in the border area.

The resolution states that the Maharashtra government will support the Marathi population in border regions and pursue legal action in the Supreme Court to ensure that these areas be incorporated into Maharashtra.

The resolution said that the Central Government should compel the Karnataka Government to carry out the decision reached in the meeting with the Union Home Minister and that the government be given an agreement to ensure the protection of the Marathi people in the border regions.
On Monday, former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray addressing the state Legislative Council said Maharashtra should be declared a Union Territory.

According to the Karnataka assembly, the state's position on the boundary dispute is clear and not a single square inch of territory will be handed to the neighbouring state.  Thackeray also had slammed at the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

Notably, the State Reorganization Act of 1956's adoption was the catalyst for the border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka. The border between Maharashtra and Karnataka had to be readjusted, according to the then-governing Maharashtra.

Subsequently, a four-member committee was formed by both states.

Karnataka rejected the Maharashtra government's offer to relocate 260 villages with a high concentration of Kannada speakers. Later, in order to expedite the situation, both governments turned to the Supreme Court.
