Three members of the royal family have been taken into custody in Saudi Arabia which includes two senior princes. They have been accused of sedition and conspiracy to overturn the government. This action against the Saudi princes is seen as an increasing hold on the power of Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. These arrests are seen as a warning to other members of the royal family in Saudi Arabia. It is being told that these arrests took place due to not supporting Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. It is also seen as a struggle for power in the royal family of Saudi Arabia.

According to media reports, Crown Prince is the son of King Salman and it is believed that with his support, he is strengthening his grip on power. The US newspaper Wall Street Journal first reported the arrests. A close acquaintance of the royal family was told in the newspaper that King Salman's younger brother Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz al-Saud and his nephew Prince Muhammad bin Nayef were arrested from their homes in the early hours of Friday. His behavior angered the leadership.

The arrest of 78-year-old Prince Ahmed is considered unexpected as he is the younger brother of King as well as a senior member of the ruling Al Saud family but he is considered an opponent of the 34-year-old Crown Prince.
