Ministry of Road Transport & Highways notifies FASTag usage mandatory from January 1, 2021

In a government order dated November 6, 2020 the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued a notification mandating FASTag usage from 1st of January 2021 also in old vehicles M and N category of four wheeler motor vehicles sold before 1st December, 2017 through amendments in CMVR, 1989. As per the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, since 1st December 2017, the FASTag had been made mandatory for all registration of new four wheeled Vehicles.

The renewal of fitness certificate will be done only if the FASTag is fitted for the Transport Vehicles. Since October 1, 2019 the National Permit Vehicles mandated FASTag usage. To get a new 3rd Party Insurance through an amendment in FORM 51 (certificate of Insurance),  the details of FASTag ID are needed with effective from 1 April 2021.

This is a major step for ensuring 100%  Electronic Means of payment of toll fees and that the vehicles pass seamlessly through the Fee Plazas. FASTag assures no waiting time at the Plazas and would save fuel. The availability of FASTag at different places are being made through physical locations and also through online mechanism easing the needy to affixed at their vehicles within the next two months at their convenience.
