Srinagar: In a disturbing incident from Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua area, a minor student studying in a government school was reportedly subjected to physical abuse by a lecturer and the school principal for writing 'Jai Shri Ram' on the blackboard. The incident is said to have occurred on Friday (25 August) at HSS Bani. Following the incident, a viral video surfaced on social media featuring the minor victim (a class X student) narrating the ordeal. In the video, he recounts how he was brutally beaten by his teacher, Farooq, and the school principal, allegedly in response to him writing 'Jai Shri Ram' on the blackboard.
On Saturday morning, the student's father admitted him to the hospital. Kathua Police confirmed that the incident took place on August 25, indicating that the student was beaten for expressing the religious phrase. An FIR has been lodged against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including intentional insult and criminal intimidation, along with the Juvenile Justice Act. The accused individuals, identified as school Principal Mohammed Hafiz and lecturer Farooq Ahmed, are expected to be arrested soon, according to the police.
Taking cognizance of the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir government has established a high-level committee, led by the Sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Bani. The committee is tasked with conducting a thorough investigation and submitting a report within two days. The report should include the details of the incident as well as the responsibilities of those involved. A similar distressing incident was reported from Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, where a teacher allegedly assaulted two students for chanting 'Jai Shri Ram.' The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) took notice of the case, urging an inquiry and appropriate action. Both incidents highlight the importance of ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for students and addressing any instances of abuse promptly and effectively.
