New Delhi: After the merger of Dadra-Nagar Haveli and Daman-Diu on the occasion of 71st Republic Day, another Union Territory has come into existence. The Modi government had announced the merger of Daman and Diu with Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Now Daman-Diu and Dadra-Nagar Haveli have been declared a union territory. The Modi government has merged Dadra-Nagar Haveli and Daman-Diu into one to improve administration.

Daman Diu, the newly formed Union Territory of Daman and the capital of Dadar and Nagar Haveli, has been built. This decision was taken in the last meeting of the Modi cabinet on Wednesday. Parliament passed the Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu (Merger of Union Territories) Bill, 2019 to merge Dadar Nagar Haveli and 2 Union Territories of Daman and Diu on 3 December.

After the merger, there will now be eight union territories in the country. Earlier, after the formation of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the number of union territories in the country was 9. After this merger, the number will come down to eight. The merger of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu has been decided by the Modi government to improve administration in both areas. This decision came 3 months after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir state into 2 union territories. After the partition of Jammu and Kashmir, 2 Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been formed.
