New Delhi: The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the go-ahead for the creation of 12 new industrial smart cities as part of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP). This ambitious project, approved on August 28, will see an estimated investment of Rs28,602 crore.
These industrial hubs will span across 10 states, aligning with six major industrial corridors. The locations include Khurpia in Uttarakhand; Rajpura-Patiala in Punjab; Dighi in Maharashtra; Palakkad in Kerala; Agra and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh; Gaya in Bihar; Zaheerabad in Telangana; Orvakal and Kopparthy in Andhra Pradesh; and Jodhpur-Pali in Rajasthan.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this initiative could attract an investment potential of around Rs.1.52 lakh crore. The cities will be developed as world-class greenfield smart cities, incorporating advanced 'plug-and-play' and 'walk-to-work' concepts.

Multi-Modal Connectivity: Aligned with the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, the cities will have comprehensive connectivity to facilitate the smooth movement of people and goods. These hubs are expected to be pivotal in regional economic transformation.
Vision for a Developed India: This project supports the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat'—a developed India. By providing readily available land for investors, the NICDP aims to foster both domestic and international investment, advancing India's self-reliance and economic growth.
Economic and Employment Impact: The NICDP is projected to create up to 1 million direct jobs and 3 million indirect jobs, significantly boosting employment and regional development.
Sustainability Focus: The new cities will incorporate green technologies and ICT-enabled utilities to minimize environmental impact. The goal is to establish not only economic centers but also models of sustainable development.
